This spring/summer there are two must have skirt lengths the midi and maxi.
On the catwalks designers ditched the mini in favour of longer skirt lengths. The maxi skirt has been around for a few seasons now and is a great versatile summer look, as it can be thrown over a bikini by the pool or be worn around town. This season it was also all over the catwalks again with Jill Sanders showcasing long styles and Alber Elbaz at Lanvin opting for ankle grazers.
The celebs have also been embracing the versatility of a long maxi skirt with the likes of Tilda Swinton, Olivia Palermo and Anja Rubik all being spotted wearing longer length skirts.
However, the spring/summer catwalks also had another skirt length - the mid length or midi.
Both skirt lengths do require a new way of styling compared to a mini-skirt. The key to the look is getting the proportions right. So tucking your top into your skirt will help steer the look away from the hippy into the fashionista territory. By untucking your top it can also look bulky, which is never a good look. These new skirt lengths are also a great opportunity to try another key trend for this season - the body. Because they tuck into longer skirts they can help balance out the look. Another good look is to wear a tailored shirt as a touch of masculine styling goes well with the femininity of the skirt.
When it comes to shoes, heels are great with midi length skirts but for maxi it has to be a flat sandal or a wedge or else it won't look right and will also be a bit difficult to walk in.
However, you choose to wear them, midi and maxi skirts are a versatile addition to any summer wardrobe, whether you're plus size or a skinny mini and can be more forgiving than a mini skirt. If your legs aren't your best feature you can still wear skirts and have a break from those trousers. And for a good choice of maxi and midi skirts try South, Love Label or Fearne Cotton's range.
